MISA reviews
its community broadcasting advocacy strategy
Representatives from chapters of the Media Institute
of Southern Africa met in Johannesburg May 20-21 to review the
organisation’s
community broadcasting advocacy strategy taking into account challenges
facing the sector and the impact of information communication technologies,
ICTs.

Issues of financial sustainability, capacity building lack
of access to ICTs, high license fees and taxation on broadcasting
equipment were some of the major issues identified as challenges
to community broadcasters.
The lack of a conducive legal and regulatory framework for community
broadcasting was also identified as a major problem in many countries
such as Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Zimbabwe where there are
no community broadcasters. The outright hostility to community broadcasting
in some of these countries was a source of concern.
However innovations such as community radio initiatives which are
thriving in repressive environments such as Zimbabwe were seen
as a beacon of hope in the quest for community broadcasting.
MISA plans to launch renewed community broadcasting advocacy in partnership
with the Dutch media development organisation Freevoice.Source: MISA
