Media under threat

Kgosi Maruje has predicted tough times ahead for Botswana media if government does not loosen its tight control of the state media comprising Botswana Television, Radio Botswana and the commercial channel RB2.

Speaking at the commemorations of the World Press Freedom Day in Francistown, Kgosi Maruje said the overbearing influence of government over media content at the state broadcasters  does not augur well for professionalism.

He said already there are telling signs of censorship on the airing of topical issues relating to politics, corruption and human rights. Kgosi Maruje said he supports the enactment of a Freedom of Information law in Botswana that would ensure journalists and the public receive public information on demand.
