Kandetu probe-minister instructs NBC Board

The NBC Board has received official instructions to investigate Director General Bob Kandetu as efforts intensify to fire him. Kandetu confirmed that the Minister of Information, Joel Kaapanda, had written to the board to request an investigation into reports that recently appeared in Namibia Today.

The SWAPO mouthpiece alleged that 36 computers, 252 solar panels and a standby generator had gone missing at the national broadcaster. Last week Kandetu held a media briefing against the will of the Ministry to inform the media that all but three computers were accounted for, while 276 solar panels were lying in the backyard and the generator is at the premises of  one company .

He invited the media and other interested parties to inspect the equipment. .Asked why the Minister would then instruct the Board to investigate the reports, Kandetu said he was "the least in the know".

Sources in the Ministry of Information said the latest investigation was clear testimony that Kandetu is counting his days at the NBC. "Why don't they just call him in and offer him a package. Just tell him that he is not the right person for the job instead of dilly-dallying and cooking stories," said one source.

Sources said the latest investigation is just a smokescreen, as those in the  ruling SWAPO  Party who see Kandetu as a strategically placed ally of Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) leader Hidipo Hamutenya want his head to roll.

SWAPO is believed to want Kandetu out of the NBC in the hope of replacing him with a tested party cadre before the campaign for the 2009 presidential and general election starts.
